MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
There is a general disposition among some today to assume that almost everything from the past is irrelevant
and that new ideas and new words are probably much more useful in dealing with today's problems than any of the
old ideas and old words.
If this debatable proposition be indeed true in some regards, I am certain that it does not apply to the idea of
the College as a Community. Let me illustrate why by a little personal history which I may be forgiven, since it is
only from personal experience that one really understands things both intellectually and emotionally.
All of my undergraduate experiences and all my graduate experiences, plus many years of teaching and admin-
istration convinced me in the 1940's and the 1950's that a college was either a community or a disunity. In those
days the facts and experiences that led to disunity were such things as: first, lack of understanding and of communi-
cation between students and faculty and administration; secondly, highly departmentalized institutions in which
the faculty of each department tended to think that the only really important matter going on in the college was the
instruction that they were giving in their own discipline; and, thirdly, a general indifference and often hostility
between the college and the town in which it was located; and of special interest to Seniors - who are in transition
from being students to becoming alumni - a lack of common interest and understanding between students and
alumni. Putting it in today's language, many forces tended to polarize the members of the college into groups
which were either indifferent or actually hostile to one another. So it was clear that the concept of College Commu-
nity to bring some sense of order out of chaos was necessary.
What of the situation today across the country on college and university campuses? The same sources of dis-
unity described above still exist. But now they are supplemented by other forces which tend! to separate student
from student, faculty from faculty, and, even on some campuses, administrator from administrator. There are those
who are so sure they are right in their opinions that in the name of freedom they would deny those who disagree
with them the freedom to have contrary opinions. There are those students who accuse students who do not agree
with them of being disloyal to the interest of all students. There are also faculty who equate their opinion of faculty
welfare as being so right that they are impatient and antagonistic toward fellow faculty members who disagree with
them. The mood of too many students, faculty and administrators is to assume that anyone who doesn't agree with
them is unintelligent, Machiavellian, and full of insincerity and bad motives. In such circumstances as exist today, it
is clear that as never before the college is either a community or a chaos.
It is therefore not idealistic and irrelevant to seek for a genuine College Community in which there is an
understanding not only of what the college must do to be a successful democratic educational enterprise, but also of
the spirit of civility and tolerance of opposing viewpoints that must obtain if the institution is to fulfill the great
expectations which are part of the American Dream. The College Community was relevant in the 1940's and
1950's. In the 1970's there is nothing more terribly relevant than the philosophy and practice of a genuine College
Community. Such a true College Community has two vital dimensions: the inner core, consisting of students,
Alumni, faculty, staff and administrators; and an outer sphere consisting of trustees, legislators and members of the
local community and of the broader society.
Adrian Rondileau, President

Football's Centennial
As the school opened for the 1969-70 year, the var-
sity football team had already started practice behind the
gym. It was a special year for collegiate football as 1969
marked its 100th anniversary. For Coach Pete Mazzafarro,
it marked the return of a host of lettermen from last year's
squad, best in school history. The team was led by co-
captains Herb Lynch and Leo Fanning; they hoped to
keep the winning ways of Bridgewater continuing.

The season opened with Bridgewater travelling
to Lewiston, Maine to play Bates College. The Bears
scored in the first period on a 3-yard pass from Jim
Waters to fullback George Sullivan. Before Bridge-
water was able to score again, Bates scored 36 points.
The Bears' final score came when Vin Hickey hit
Rich Roath with a ten-yard toss to make the final
score 36-15.

On the following weekend, BSC played host to
Frostburg (Md.) State under the lights at Legion
Field. To say that the game did not have a storybook
ending would be a lie.
Quarterback Vin Hickey masterfully engi-
neered the Bears 80 yards in the final two minutes to
tie the game.
The TD came on a Hickey to Sullivan pass to
make it 21-19. The Bears went for the two points and
hit paydirt when Hickey hit halfback Jim Federico
with a pass for the two points. The final score was
21-21.

Hitting the road again, BSC travelled to
Maine Maritime. After failing twice to score,
Bridgewater scored on a 42-yard pass from Hick-
ey to Bill Matheson; the extra point failed. In the
second half, Maine scored on a Cahill-Mercer pass
and then added the extra point which proved the
margin of victory in this hard fought battle. The
final: MM - 7, BSC - 6.
152
Still looking for win No. 1, Bridgewater tra-
velled to play Hudson Valley Community College, an
addition to Bear football. After a scoreless first half,
Bridgewater scored on an 80-yard punt return by
George Sullivan. The Bears scored again when Sulli-
van cracked over from the 3 to make it 14-6. Hudson
scored but missed the extra points when the defense
held and Bridgewater left Troy, N. Y. with VICTO-
RY #1.
Homecoming saw Bridgewater playing Nichols
College and the Bears rambling to a 40-0 rout. The
Bears had over 458 yards in total offense as they were
able to manhandle Nichols. Five different players
scored as BSC won its second game of the year.
The next weekend saw Bridgewater playing
Brockport, a team they had never beaten. After traib
ing only 6-0, the roof collapsed and the Golden
Eagles romped to a 34-0 victory as Bridgewater con-
tinued to be jinxed when playing Brockport.
The Bears returned to the winning track with a
25-6 win over Curry College. The Bear defense was
tough as they kept the Curry offense at bay by in-
terceptions and fumbles.
With a 3-3-1 record, the Bears hoped to make it
a winning season as they travelled to play Trenton
(N.J.) State. It was a crisp snow-flurried afternoon,
but Bridgewater got caught in the storm of a power-
ful Trenton offense. The outcome was Trenton, the
victor, 51-6 in the first meeting between the schools.
The final slate showed the Bears finishing 3-4-1.
After the season, Bridgewater was crowned
NESC Champs in the league with Maine and Curry
by virtue of scoring the most points compared to the
others.

During the fall of '69 a determined field hockey team took on a
number of teams from the various colleges throughout the state.
The first game saw Salem State fall victim to Bridgewater by a
score of 3-1. For the remainder of the season, wins weren't so easy to
come by.
It wasn't until the Bridgewater girls shutout Westfield State in
their final game that they obtained their next victory.
The season ended with Bridgewater posting a 2-2-1 record.

much as it had a new coach in Ed Calabrese, a former cross-country
runner at B.S.C. The team had high hopes when the season began, but
after losing the first meet by one point, they realized that stiff compe-
tition lay ahead. During the season the team was captained by David
Layton.
160
Corey Powers and Paul Branigan ex-
changed the first position frequently while
Bill Busiek and Tom Steele were in the third
and fourth positions respectively. Dave Lay-
ton and Jeff Livingston both did well in most
meets. Unfortunately, injuries hurt the team
a great deal and the final team record was 5
wins and 7 losses.

Martin Rizzo
Memorial Game
An annual event on the Bridgewater campus is the
Martin Rizzo Memorial Game. This year the faculty
played host to the Harlem Magicians. The Magicians,
having appeared at Bridgewater a few years back, were re-
turning to the grounds of a previous victory.
All the members of the Magicians were adept in
some or all phases of basketball. They showed talent in
dribbling, shooting and just plain fun.
162
163
The Harlem Magicians and the faculty, led by some out-
standing players such as "Pistol" Pete Mazzaferro, Tom Knudson
and the ever-popular Mr. Donald Keay, were able to produce an-
other successful Martin Rizzo Scholarship Game. Though victory
did not come to the faculty, they can always wait until next year.

Volleyball
The 1970 season is the first season for women's intercollegiate vol-
leyball. The team's youth provides a basis for future teams. The season
proved to be an exciting one as the Bridgewater women sought THAT
first win in intercollgiate competition.

Swimming!!!
During the recent four years at B.S.C.,
the athletic program has grown immensely.
In the fall of '69 Bridgewater added its new-
est varsity sport, swimming. Coach Joe
Yeskewicz was the new mentor for the fledg-
ling swimmers.
The season has turned up records in:
the breaststroke, George Pelati; the freestyle,
Bob Johnston; and the butterfly, Mel Crotty.

Only three years ago a new organization ap-
peared on the sports scene at B.S.C. Through student
interest a hockey squad was born at Bridgewater. The
squad is only a club sport, but is hoping for varsity
status in the expanding sports program.
The season opened with the hockey club edging
archrival Stonehill by a 5-4 margin. In its next outing
at Meehan Auditorium the Bears were outclassed by
a tough R.I. College of Design Team.
Following that, the icemen lost to Stonehill,
5-4, the same score by which Bridgewater had defeat-
ed that team previously.
The Bridgewater attack, led by Bob Lovett's
brilliant stickhandling and Dan Cobb's solid check-
ing, combined with the reliable goaltending of Frank
"Gump" Cullen, produced a reputable season.
174
175
Basketball: 1969-1970
The season looked bright for the
Bears' hardwood fortunes. Coach Tom
Knudson had several returning letter-
men led by co-captains Jerry Crowley and
Barry Fitzpatrick, in addition to two
transfers, Barney Ross and Frank Smith,
and 6'8" freshman Keith Richards.
The Bears opened at SMU and
came out a winner. Sparking the Bear at-
tack was Barry Fitzpatrick and Frank
Smith.
Playing host to Salem State in their
next outing, the Bears lost. Later in the
week, Salem awarded the game to BSC
because they used an ineligible player.
Standing 2-0, the Bears went to
Nichols for an SNEC game. A loss here
started a downhill trend which carried
176
through until the Christmas vacation as
the Bears won only 1 of the next 7 con-
tests. The record was now 3-6 on the
campaign:
After semester break, the basketball
team returned to the firing line. They
hosted Curry College and lost 72-70 in a
hard-fought game.
The next outing was against Quin-
nipiac, one of the best small college clubs
in New England. In a complete turna-
bout of the season's previous form, the
Bears ambushed the Braves from Quin-
nipiac 71-66. The Bears were on the
move.
They next knocked off Fitchburg
State 79-73- In a return game with Nich-
ols, the Bears won 88-77 behind the 27
points of Barney Ross and the 20 re-
bounds of the ever-improving Keith
Richards.
Hitting the road after 4 straight
home games, BSC travelled to Merri-
mack and fell 111-83- Seniors Dan Ryan
177
178
(29) and Barry Fitzpatrick (27) led the
Bears in a losing effort.
Returning to their home, Kelly
Gym, the Bears ripped Lowell State after
32 minutes of close basketball. The Bears
posted 99 points in a 99-78 trouncing of
Lowell.
The record stood at 7-8 when Bos-
ton State came to Bridgewater. But, for
the second time in the season, Boston
State proved too tough as Bridgewater
fell 102-86.
The next night, traditional rival
Stonehill came to do battle. After a close
game for the first half and third quarter,
Stonehill broke away and coasted to a
91-68 victory.
Playing away at RIC, the Bears

then fell again before returning home to
play SMU and winning 82-77. Dan
Ryan, who had been setting the pace
most of the year, canned 21 points in the
effort.
The next outing was against West-
field State. Bridgewater was forced into
overtime by the Owls, but finally won
88-87 as Dan Ryan scored 32 points be-
fore fouling out. The Bears' record was
now 9-11 with a 7-5 record at home.

After travelling to Salem and scor-

portant meetings left with SNEC mem-
bers, Bryant and Quinnipiac. The Bears
suffered two setbacks and a chance for
the conference crown was lost.
The final game saw Plymouth State
roll to a 113-98 victory over the Bears.
This year's club gave the school its best
record in a decade with a 10 win-14 loss
mark. The Seniors taking their places in
the record book were Dan Ryan, becom-
ing the most prolific scorer in any cam-
paign for Bridgewater, and co-captain
Barry Fitzpatrick becoming the third
highest career scorer in Bridgewater his-
tory.
183
Women's Basketball
The women's basketball team again had a big
season. The team, captained by senior Jeannette Beres
and coached by Miss Judith Schneider, in her first
year as coach, led the girls' basketball fortunes. The
top scorer was Karen McDonald along with Jean-
nette Beres.
Bridgewater has changed from six player basket-
ball to the new experimental five player game. It em-
ploys tactics and strategy similar to their, male coun-
terpart.

The team, with its superb record, brought Bridgewater
much recognition as a result of their competition in the Women's
National Invitational Tourney at Northeastern. They competed
against some of the leading women's teams in the country.
185
The Junior Varsity participated in the Massachusetts State College Basketball
Tourney, of which the varsity had been the defending champs.
186
The jayvee club played against varsity squads of the other
State Colleges in the Tourney.

Intramurals
To Plato, the educated man was trained in body as well as mind.
At Bridgewater, those unable to engage in varsity sports take part in a
wide range of intramural activities. Included are football, basketball,
softball, volleyball, swimming and track.
The intramural program started with a strong eight team foot-
ball league. The championship was determined in the last game when
the Sigs outplayed a strong Kappa team in an 8-0 victory.
188

With activities moving indoors, basketball took its place as the
sport of the season. Eighteen teams went to the line in an effort to win
one of the positions in the playoffs.
Between the basketball and Softball season, the annual volleyball
tourney was held. The activities encompassed by the softball league,
swimming tourney, and track meet concluded the intramural pro-
gram.

Horace Mann
Award
The Horace Mann Award is the highest award
that can be given by the student body to a teacher at
Bridgewater State College. The award symbolizes ex-
cellence in teaching as well as genuine interest and
concern for those taught.
The Class of 1970 presented this award to Mr.
Robert J. Bent, Professor of Mathematics, whom we
believe best fulfills these qualities.

The baseball team produced the best record in a
decade as they ended with a 10-11 slate. The team was
coached by Harry Lehmann and led by senior co-
captains Gary Langenbach and Ron Dziergowski.
The season opened with a 4 game pre-season trip
south, the first in Bridgewater's history. They played at
Towson (Md.) State, twice at Salisbury (Md.) State
and finished with a game against Johns Hopkins.
During the regular season the team suffered early
and stood at a 4-10 record. Then after a ninth inning
victory over Lowell, the Bears streaked to five wins be-
fore losing at Nichols in the second game of a double-
header. Then in the season finale, the Bears pulled out
a ninth inning victory over S.M.U. This brought the
record to 10-11.
Some of the outstanding players included Dan
Ryan who played a great defensive game at third and
Henry Cormier, pitcher. A large contribution to the
Bears' success was Peter Johnson, a junior, who set a
school batting record (.367), home runs (5) and led
the team in rbi's with 24. Bruce Larson led the pitchers
with an e.r.a. of 1.70. The season was an improvement
over the past and the outlook for the future, good.

Tennis Team
Bridgewater's tennis team enjoyed its best season in the
school's history by rolling up twelve victories against a lone de-
feat. The surprising netmen reversed the previous year's record
in which the Bears captured only one match. The keys to the
team's success were newcomer Bill Busiek and captain Augie
Furtado. Busiek captured the MVP trophy by winning all but
one of his matches. Furtado, the only senior on the squad
played well in singles and doubles. The other members of the
squad were Ray Sousa; Joe Walker, capt-elect; Ron Kendall;
Nagy Webby; and Frank Cullen. The Bears' only setback of the
year came in the ninth contest versus powerful Salem State.
However, B.S.C. had previously defeated Salem to hand them
their only defeat of the year. Joe Walker and Augie Furtado
won the honor of representing B.S.C. in the NAIA national
tournament in Kansas City, Mo. In all, the netmen under the
guidance of Dr. Henry Rosen, combined skill with desire to
compile the best record of any sports team this year.
